Okay, after a lot of trial and error, I finally came up with the correct dimensions for a felted DS case! Here's what I did.
Yarn: Knit Picks's Wool of the Andes (100% wool), worsted, in the natural color which I dyed with Kool-aid!
Needle Size: 10.5 US
Instructions: It's really pretty simple- just a matter of sewing all of the pieces together in the end. Everything is worked in garter stitch.

You need to make a total of 7 pieces: 3 pieces that are 4.5 x 8 inches, 2 pieces that are 4.5 x 2 inches, and 2 pieces that are 8 x 2 inches. This is how it breaks down:
4.5 x 2: Cast on 22, knit 14 rows, loosely bind off
4.5 x 8: Cast on 22, knit 56 rows, loosely bind off
8 x 2: Cast on 34, knit 14 rows, loosely bind off
Then, once you have all of your pieces knitted up, put them together like so:

Now, felt that thing! Make sure as you felt that you keep an eye on the process, so that it doesn't felt together or shrink too much. When you're finished, cut up an old granola bar box or some other small cardboard box and fold it into roughly the shape of your Nintendo DS, and use that to block your case. Once it's dry, sew on a button and carefully cut out a button hole, and you're done!

That's really cool..but I was wondering if it comes out the same way if you don't felt it? If it doesn't, would you mind telling me how to felt? I would really love to make this. I don't have a blog, but my email address is swimmingchick117@yahoo.com. Thanks. (By the way, I found you on knittingpatterncentral.com)
I am also curious if you can not "felt" with this pattern. I am a fairly new knitter and if I will turn out better with "felting" it will you please inform me how to "felt". I also dont have a blog but my email adress if Twilightfreakleonard.94@gmail.com thank you =)
ps love this pattern
Thanks for your interest! I've emailed you both with felting instructions.
This case, if not felted, would be too big and flimsy for a DS. Felting, which is basically shrinking a wool project on purpose, makes the fabric much thicker so that it adds more protection and shape to your finished peice. Felting isn't scary, I promise! It's just a matter of running it through the washing machine a few times until it shrinks to the desired size, kind of like when you accidentally threw that wool sweater in there except none of the disappointment when the wash is done :) For a good guide on how to do it, check out http://knitty.com/ISSUEwinter03/FEATfelthis.html or http://www.lusciousgracious.com/felt.htm
Thanks for checking out the pattern!
I love this pattern. I've been looking for something to make for my little brother for his birthday. Unfortunately, he doesn't have a DS lite. He has the clunky original grey DS.
